"Though it is entirely natural for us to project human motives
onto dogs, ultimately this is unfair: it puts expectations on
dogs that disregard their reality. Dogs wander in their own universe
and resist being judged according to human standards. We
do justice to a relationship with a dog when we honor it as it
is - A DOG." - "I and Dog," The Monks of New Skete
Sadly, many dogs lose their lives every year in
shelters across the country because of seemingly
irresolvable behavior issues. Even today, many dedicated
dog rescue advocates are still stymied when resolving an aggression issue or
other unacceptable behavior. For years, Second Chance at Love Humane
Society struggled with these behavior issues.

Cheri & Cesar with "the pack!"
|
Gratefully, a few years ago, Second Chance at Love Humane Society
Founder, Cheri Lucas, met a remarkable man named Cesar Millan,
also known as “"The Dog Whisperer."” Millan
patiently mentored and coached Lucas on how to rehabilitate the
shelter's
dogs by taking a leadership position.
Since that training, Second Chance at Love adoption rates have
increased and placements have become more permanent. Formerly
aggressive dogs now socialize with other dogs, fearful dogs have
gained confidence
and the entire Second Chance at Love “pack” is more
balanced and peaceful.
The primary error we make when relating to our dogs is that
we “"humanize"” them.
We forget dogs are a different species with different needs. No
amount of playing “mommy” or “daddy” will
ever make them our children. They still have canine DNA and are
hardwired to be dogs. Once we realize the disservice we do them
by not allowing them to be fulfilled as dogs, the task of rehabilitation
is made easier.
Dogs are pack animals. They require a pack leader to keep them
in line. If the dog perceives that his owner is NOT the leader,
then he is forced to take on the leadership role. That's
when the problems begin.
Any unacceptable dog behavior can be resolved once leadership
is established and exercise and discipline are included in the
dog's life. In fact, the ability to resolve a dog's behavior
issues really has more to do with the owner's behavior than the
dogs!
Working with dogs is time consuming and challenging. There
is no "magic
wand." But the technique Lucas has learned from Cesar Millan has been
well worth the results for many happy owners and their dogs!
We encourage you to consider re-defining what love means to your
DOG. If you strive to fulfill your dog based on HIS needs, you
will be able to experience the possibility of a wonderful, fulfilling
relationship with your best friend!
